Salvamont Romania marks National Mountain Rescue Day with safety initiatives

On 1 August, Romania observes the National Day of Salvamont, honoring mountain rescue teams that operate throughout the country. The day is highlighted by a pilot program in Brașov that installs QR codes on trail markers, giving hikers instant access to safety information. Authorities also promote the "-1" campaign, aiming to reduce at least one serious mountain accident each August. Recent statistics show over 700 people rescued in August 2025, with 13 fatalities.

In parallel, several Romanian counties held promotion ceremonies for emergency‑service personnel. On 31 July and 1 August, firefighters in Bihor, Botoșani, Arad and other counties received new ranks, recognizing their experience and service. Jandarm units in Bacău, Gorj and other regions also advanced officers and sub‑officers.

Other local news includes a water‑supply restriction in Alba County, limiting tap water to eight hours a day due to high temperatures, and a police operation that seized more than 140 cubic metres of illegally harvested timber in Alba.
