Romanian firefighters in Greece adopt cat mascot named Garfield
Romanian firefighters deployed to Greece for wildfire prevention and intervention missions have gained an unofficial mascot. During patrol and reconnaissance operations in high-risk vegetation areas, the team encountered an orange cat that approached them curiously.
The firefighters, who provided the animal with food and water, named the cat ‘Garfield’ due to its resemblance to the famous cartoon character. According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), the cat chose to remain with the crew, accompanying them throughout their exercises. The IGSU shared images of the encounter, describing the feline as a new ‘silent colleague’ and emphasizing the importance of protecting all lives, including vulnerable animals.
