Romanian Football Federation sanctions U21 staff following scandal
The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) has imposed disciplinary sanctions on members of the Romania U21 national team staff following a scandal in Spain. Mihai Stoichiță, the FRF technical director, confirmed that staff members, including coach Costin Curelea, Ionuț Stancu, and Marius Niculae, faced financial penalties after being seen at a social gathering with businessman Nicu Gheară during official team duties.
As a result of the breach of internal regulations, Curelea’s final salary was reduced by 25%, while Marius Niculae and Iulian Oțelea will see their monthly incomes decreased by 25% until the end of 2026. Stoichiță emphasized a policy of strict discipline, noting that further involvement in similar incidents could lead to contract termination.
Following the team's failure to qualify for the EURO U21, which included a 1-7 loss to Spain, the future of the coaching staff is under review. While no official decision has been made regarding a successor for Curelea, Stoichiță mentioned that Adrian Mutu is considered a strong candidate for the position, though discussions with the current coach and FRF President Răzvan Burleanu must occur first.
