Romania faces political scandal over alleged US interference in government collapse

A report by the Wall Street Journal has sparked a political scandal in Romania, alleging that US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, suggested the United States could influence political changes in any country. The report claims that during a dinner in Athens in March, Guilfoyle engaged in a tense exchange with Greek Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, allegedly remarking, “We can do this to any country we want. We can do this here too,” in reference to the imminent collapse of the Romanian government.

The controversy centers on the dismissal of Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan via a motion of censure in May. Allegations suggest the US administration may have worked behind the scenes to trigger this dismissal because Bolojan refused to accept a costly agreement to import US liquefied natural gas (LNG) through the Vertical Gas Corridor. While the Social Democratic Party (PSD) admitted to meetings with Guilfoyle, they denied that these discussions were linked to White House interests, asserting they focused on energy transit roles.

Romanian officials have responded to the allegations. Acting Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu stated that Guilfoyle’s visit to Romania was for a private business event rather than official state negotiations. US Ambassador to Romania Darryl Nirenberg expressed full confidence in Romania’s democracy, stating that internal political issues must be resolved by the country itself.
