Romanian teachers and health workers intensify protests over new salary law

Romanian unions representing teachers and health‑care employees are organising large‑scale demonstrations against the draft unified salary law. Education federations, including the “Spiru Haret” Federation of Education Trade Unions and the Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education, say around 20,000 teachers will gather at Victory Square in Bucharest on 17 June before marching to Parliament, demanding fair pay and warning the law will push educators into poverty.

The health‑care federation “Solidaritatea Sanitară” warns the same legislation is inadequately analysed, could cut overtime and night‑shift allowances, and may cause a mass exodus of younger staff. The union has threatened a general strike after 21 June if the government does not reopen negotiations.

Both sectors accuse the government of ignoring previous commitments and of imposing austerity measures that jeopardise the quality of public services.
