Romanian unions protest new salary law amid fears of wage cuts

National unions representing health workers, judges, finance staff and pension‑house employees have organised coordinated protests in Romania against the government's draft Law on Salary. Sanitas federations say the bill would cut incomes for more than half of health‑care and social‑assistance personnel, with delegate Darius Ilieșiu warning that "the government is cutting our earnings and offering a token aid". The judiciary, led by the High Court of Cassation and Justice, claims the law would reduce judges' salaries by about 3,700 lei and grefiers' by 2,400 lei. Finance and tax‑authority workers anticipate monthly losses of 2,000‑4,000 lei. Demonstrations are planned for 3 June in Bucharest, with unions expecting 15‑20 000 participants, marching from the Government building to Constitution Square. The protesters demand the immediate withdrawal of the draft, a return to earlier negotiated terms and a real social dialogue to prevent further wage reductions and inequities.
