Romania marks Universal Day of the Ia with nationwide cultural events

On 24 June 2026 Romania commemorated the Universal Day of the Ia, a traditional embroidered shirt that symbolizes national identity.

At the Dâmboviţa County Cultural Center an ethnographic exhibition of Liliana Iotu’s collection was opened and the folk‑dance troupe “Mugurași de la Chindie” performed.

In Chișinău, Moldova, the 7th International Ethnology Symposium gathered researchers from Romania, Moldova and Ukraine to discuss the cultural and socio‑political impact of the Romanian ia and popular dress; the Dacian and Roman Civilization Museum of Deva was represented.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement that the “Ziua Iei este patrimoniu cultural românesc viu”, noting its inclusion on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list in 2022 and its promotion through diplomatic exhibitions worldwide.

In Harghita’s Miercurea‑Ciuc, the Romanian community organized a “Ia and photography” event at the Museum of the Olt and Upper Mureș, featuring a photo exhibition and workshops that encourage young people to learn traditional sewing techniques.
