Romanian icons Horațiu Mălăele and Tudor Gheorghe celebrate birthdays

Actor, director and visual artist Horațiu Mălăele turned 74 on 31 July, although official records list his birth date as 1 August 1952. Born in Târgu Jiu, he has built a five‑decade career across Romanian theatre, film and graphic art, directing acclaimed productions such as “Puricele” and “Carlo contra Carlo”.

Singer‑songwriter and poet Tudor Gheorghe celebrated his 81st birthday on 1 August. Born in Podari, Dolj, he overcame a difficult childhood marked by his father’s imprisonment to become one of Romania’s most beloved cultural figures. Over more than five decades he has popularised poetry through recitals, collaborated with symphonic orchestras and created over 40 music‑theatre shows that have toured Romania and abroad.
