Romanian IT sector concentrated in Bucharest and Cluj hubs

A study titled ‘Romanian IT Market Study: Evolution and Perspectives’ highlights the concentration of Romania’s technology sector within five key regions. The Bucharest-Ilfov area remains the undisputed leader, followed by Cluj, Timiș, and Iași. In 2024, these five counties accounted for approximately 87% of the sector's total turnover, 75% of net profits, and 85% of total employees.

Cluj has established itself as a major technological hub, generating approximately €2.48 billion in turnover in 2024 with 2,650 companies meeting the study's criteria of annual turnover exceeding €50,000. Between 2020 and 2024, Cluj-Napoca saw a compound annual growth rate of 19.8% in IT turnover. While Cluj shows strong growth, Timișoara recorded a more significant annual increase of 38% during the same period.

The report, conducted by the Romanian Economic Monitor at Babeș-Bolyai University in partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Transilvania IT Cluster, attributes the success of these hubs to their status as major university centers. This academic foundation helps attract foreign investors and fosters a specialized ecosystem of multinational companies and local entrepreneurs.
