Veterinarian Son of Suceava Mayor Detained Over Illegal Killing of Hundreds of Dogs

A 29‑year‑old veterinarian, the son of Berchișești mayor Violeta Țăran, was detained for 24 hours by the Suceava County Prosecutor’s Office on charges of illegally euthanising 662 dogs at the private shelter “Imperiul Căţei”. Prosecutors allege the killings, carried out between December 2023 and April 2026, violated Romanian law that permits euthanasia only for incurably ill animals after a veterinary examination witnessed by NGO representatives. The investigation began after a complaint in December 2025 and was later taken over by the prosecutor on 6 April 2026. The veterinarian also works for the Directorate for Veterinary and Food Safety (DSVSA) in Suceava. He faces accusations of “killing animals with intent, without right” under Law 205/2004.
