Romanian-language class reopens in Orlivka, Ukraine

A Romanian-language first-grade class in Orlivka, located in the Odesa region of Ukraine, has been reopened following diplomatic efforts. The class, which serves seven children, had been closed just four days after the start of the school year, with parents initially urged to transfer their children to Ukrainian-language classes.

Claudiu Tătaru, the Consul General of Romania in Odesa, traveled to the locality to mediate between local authorities and the Romanian community. Following discussions with the Mayor of Reni, Igor Plehov, and the head of the Ismail District Military Administration, the school's Professional Council approved the reopening. This decision was subsequently validated by the Reni Local Council.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that isolated incidents regarding Romanian-language classes have been addressed, emphasizing that the law guarantees these rights. Romanian and Ukrainian authorities are now working toward a long-term institutional solution for the Romanian community's education before the next phase of Ukraine's secondary education reform takes effect in September 2027.
