Romanian Leu faces depreciation as Euro hits historic highs

The Romanian Leu is facing significant downward pressure, with the Euro reaching historic highs against the local currency. Recent data shows the Euro hitting levels between 5.26 and 5.28 lei, driven by domestic political instability and international economic factors, including rising energy prices and central bank interest rate adjustments.

Financial professionals surveyed by CFA Romania anticipate continued depreciation, forecasting an exchange rate of 5.31 lei per Euro within six months and 5.36 lei by next September. This outlook is accompanied by concerns regarding stagflation—a combination of high inflation and economic stagnation.

Economic indicators suggest a challenging period ahead for Romania. The macroeconomic confidence index fell in August, and public debt is projected to rise to 63% of GDP over the next 12 months. Additionally, there are market concerns regarding potential sovereign debt downgrades by S&P Global Ratings, which could further drive up borrowing costs and the Euro exchange rate.
