Romanian linguistic debate over the term 'supat
A linguistic controversy has emerged in Romania regarding the term 'supat', a neutral noun referring to the space under a bed. While the term has gained social media attention, experts clarify that it is not a new addition intended to replace common expressions like 'sub pat'.
According to Rodica-Ileana Zafiu, a professor at the University of Bucharest, the word is already documented in the DOOM3 (the orthographic, orthoepic, and morphological dictionary of the Romanian language). The dictionary serves to document the history, diversity, and transformations of the language, including popular, regional, or archaic terms. The inclusion of 'supat' is a reflection of documented lexical inventory rather than a recent decision by the Romanian Academy to change daily speech patterns.
