Romanian mayor and vice‑mayor detained after municipal car found without insurance

Gelu Spaiuc, the PSD mayor of the commune of Sirețel in Iași County, and his wife Doina Spaiuc, the local vice‑mayor, were stopped by police while traveling to Vatra Dornei for a vacation. The vehicle they were using – the town hall’s car – was found to be operating without a valid civil‑liability insurance (RCA). Officers seized the licence plates and the registration document, and the car was immobilised until the officials pay the fine and obtain new coverage.

The incident highlights a breach of Romanian traffic law by public officials. Spaiuc has led the commune since 2020, and the couple previously faced a legal dispute over unpaid wages, but the current case concerns the misuse of municipal property for personal travel without proper insurance.
