Romanian Mayors Silviu Șchiopu Sentenced, Liviu Negoiță Freed by Court

Silviu Șchiopu, mayor of the commune of Ungra, was sentenced by the Brașov Court of Appeal to 1 year and 4 months of suspended imprisonment for drug‑trafficking offenses. The appellate court reduced the original penalty of 1 year and 6 months, also lowering fines for two companies linked to his CBD business. Under Romanian law a final conviction removes the right to hold public office, and authorities will examine the status of his mayoral mandate.

Liviu Negoiță, former mayor of Cernavodă, was released after the High Court of Cassation and Justice annulled his 4‑year corruption conviction. The court ruled that the alleged conduct did not fit any provision of the penal code, resulting in his acquittal and allowing him to return to the municipal administration.
