Romanian military heroes honored in Varnița and Sfântu Gheorghe

Various ceremonies are being held to honor Romanian military personnel who died during World War II.

In the village of Varnița, a wooden troiță (wayside cross) has been inaugurated to commemorate border guard Ioniță Chiriac and four soldiers from the 3rd Dorobanți Regiment who fell during the battles for Tighina in the summer of 1941. The monument, reconstructed by the Monumentum Association based on a 1939 model, is part of a broader initiative to restore ten monuments dedicated to border guards who died during the interwar period.

In Sfântu Gheorghe, Romania, military and religious ceremonies will mark the 82nd anniversary of the city's liberation from foreign occupation in the autumn of 1944. The commemorations include events at the bust of General Grigore Bălan and at the city hall, where the Romanian tricolor was first raised in 1944. The day will conclude with a military parade and wreath-laying ceremonies.
