Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs responds to Waze police alert trend

The Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs has responded to a new online trend where drivers use the Waze navigation app to communicate the presence of police checkpoints through coded symbols. The Ministry issued a public statement reminding motorists that following traffic regulations is the most effective way to avoid sanctions, noting that navigation apps are intended to provide route information rather than serve as a tool to bypass law enforcement.

This development follows a European Court of Justice ruling regarding geolocation-based driver assistance services. While the ruling addressed legal frameworks in France concerning the restriction of information regarding police controls for public safety reasons, it does not constitute a blanket ban on such warnings across all European Union member states.
