Romanian MP Dan Tănasă sent to trial for hate speech

Romanian Deputy Dan Tănasă, a member of the AUR party, has been sent to trial for incitement to violence, hatred, or discrimination. The decision follows an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

Prosecutors allege that in August 2025, Tănasă used social media to incite hatred against workers in Romania from Asia and Africa. His posts urged citizens to refuse food delivery orders if they were not fulfilled by Romanians and criticized the mass import of unskilled labor. The indictment notes that such discriminatory acts can seriously disrupt social relations.

The AUR party has criticized the decision, stating that a political stance on migration and the labor market is being transformed into a criminal case. The party maintains it will defend Tănasă's right to a fair trial and the right of any parliamentarian to express political opinions.
