Romanian municipalities provide equipped backpacks to students

Local administrations in Romania are implementing programs to provide students with fully equipped backpacks to assist families with the costs of the new school year.

In Șelimbăr, the municipality is continuing its ‘First Backpack’ program for the fifth consecutive year. A total of 1,534 students from preschool, primary, and gymnasium levels at the ‘Mihai Viteazu’ School and the local kindergarten will receive backpacks. Each backpack is valued at approximately 150 lei and contains essential supplies such as notebooks, pencil cases, pencils, and pens. Mayor Marius Grecu stated the initiative aims to support parents with school expenses and ensure all children start the year on equal footing.

Similarly, the Lugoj City Hall is running its ‘My First Backpack’ program specifically for students entering preparatory classes for the 2026-2027 school year. The municipality has acquired 322 backpacks, each valued at 517 lei. These kits include pencil cases, notebooks, and materials for drawing and manual work. Mayor Călin Dobra noted the initiative is intended to ease the emotional and financial transition for children and their families as they begin their school lives.
