Romanian Naval Forces induct first AAV-7 amphibious assault vehicles
The Romanian Naval Forces are set to induct their first nine AAV-7 amphibious assault vehicles into service on September 28 in the Babadag garrison. These tracked armored vehicles will be assigned to the 307 Marine Infantry Regiment ‘Heracleea’, which is responsible for operations in the Danube Delta and along the Black Sea coast.
The acquisition program, initiated in 2024 through cooperation with the United States, is divided into two stages. The first stage involves 21 vehicles, while a second stage, approved by Parliament, includes an additional 44 vehicles with an estimated value of up to $270 million. Deliveries are scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2027.
The AAV-7 features a three-person crew and can transport up to 21 fully equipped infantrymen or five tons of cargo. Standard armament includes an M2 12.7 mm heavy machine gun and an MK-19 40 mm grenade launcher mounted in a common turret. These vehicles are intended to enhance the maneuverability and response capabilities of Romanian marines between land and water environments, ensuring interoperability with NATO military structures.
