Romanian officials address school funding and religious service participation
In Romania, two separate issues involving schools have emerged at the start of the new academic year. In Botoșani, Mayor Cosmin Andrei has called on school directors to stop requesting financial contributions from parents for class or school funds. The mayor argued that such requests are unjustified because local authorities have already invested in school rehabilitations, furniture, and computing equipment through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
In Cluj, a controversy arose following a directive from the County School Inspectorate requesting that schools ensure the participation of one class of students in a Te Deum service at the Metropolitan Cathedral. Metropolitan Andrei Andreicuț clarified that while students are welcome, they should not be coerced into attending. School Inspector Marinela Marc also addressed the issue, stating that attendance is traditionally voluntary, often involving students from the Orthodox College, and that no sanctions or mandatory attendance checks are performed.
