Romanian officials and WWF urge action on illegal logging ahead of World Environment Day

Deputy Mihai Țiu of Olt County used World Environment Day to denounce the lack of state action on Romania’s environmental degradation. He highlighted illegal forest cutting, uncontrolled water‑course exploitation and the conversion of aggregate sites into fish ponds, stressing the impact on local communities’ water supply and land quality. Țiu called for concrete legislative measures to protect forests, water resources and to curb illegal activities, urging authorities to end years of neglect.

On the same day, WWF Romania launched an interactive online map that lets citizens pinpoint and describe environmental problems such as pollution, illegal waste dumping and deforestation. Users can add photos and details, creating a national overview to support advocacy and policy‑making. The platform aims to increase civic participation and improve the understanding of environmental concerns across the country.

Both initiatives were framed within the global observance of World Environment Day on 5 June, whose 2026 UN theme is “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”.
