Romanian Parliament approves merit indemnity law for 1986 Steaua players

The Romanian Parliament has unanimously passed a law to extend the categories of athletes eligible for state-funded merit indemnities. The legislation specifically targets members of the Steaua Bucharest team that won the European Cup in 1986, as well as other athletes with significant European achievements.

Under the new law, eligible players are expected to receive a monthly amount of approximately 6,240 lei. Former player Gabi Balint noted that while the Chamber of Deputies has adopted the project with 253 votes in favor and no opposition, the measure still requires promulgation by the President before being published in the Official Gazette to take effect.

The law also aims to include other high-achieving athletes, such as handball players from CSM București and potentially historical winners from Rapid Bucharest, provided they meet the legal criteria.
