Romanian Parliament pushes law to keep officials' asset and interest declarations public
A draft law introduced by Justice Minister Cătălin Predoiu would remove public access to the asset declarations of Romanian officials, keeping the documents at the National Agency for Integrity (ANI) but no longer allowing citizens or journalists to view them. The Chamber of Deputies' legal commission must deliver its report on this proposal by 27 July.
In response, the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Save Romania Union (USR) have submitted a joint amendment to the Integrity Law that would require all senior public officials—including President Nicușor Dan, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, parliamentarians and heads of key institutions such as the National Bank of Romania, the Financial Supervisory Authority, the Competition Council, the Ombudsman and the Superior Council of Magistracy—to file a financial‑interest declaration. These declarations would be processed through ANI’s e‑DAI platform and made public within 60 days of generation. Currently, Romania has no legal requirement to publish such financial‑interest statements. The amendment is presented as a step toward stronger integrity standards and greater public oversight.
