Romanian police detain drunk driver and boost automated radar enforcement

Police from the Medgidia municipal force detained a 36‑year‑old man on 11 June after he was found riding an unregistered motorcycle while intoxicated, with a blood‑alcohol level of 1.18 mg/L. The driver had no licence for any vehicle category. He was taken to a hospital for biological sampling, then held for 24 hours and will appear before the Medgidia prosecutor.

At the same time, Romania is expanding its e‑SIGUR traffic‑monitoring system, which combines fixed and mobile radars and camera units to automatically record speed and other violations. Mobile radars can be moved to high‑risk spots, while fixed installations provide continuous monitoring of specific locations, including speed‑average calculations over road sections. When a breach is confirmed, the vehicle’s registration is identified and a fine is mailed to the owner, eliminating the need for an immediate on‑the‑spot stop.

These developments illustrate a broader push by Romanian authorities to tighten road safety through both traditional policing and modern automated enforcement tools.
