Romanian police officers sentenced for traffic and licensing corruption

In Iași, a court sentenced 16 police officers accused of receiving free food from the restaurant Mamma Mia in exchange for lenient traffic treatment. Four officers received prison terms of up to four years, nine were given suspended sentences of two years and eight months and barred from serving in the police for three years, while the restaurant’s owner Andrei Hîncu and director Nicolae Barabaș each received four‑year prison sentences.

In Arad, a separate case involving traffic‑permit examiners convicted of taking bribes was also heard by the Tribunal of Timiș. The court imposed only limited monetary confiscations ranging from 750 lei to 400 euros for five defendants, despite a multi‑year financial investigation by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) that identified assets worth hundreds of thousands of euros. DNA has appealed the decision, seeking broader asset seizure.
