Romanian police reveal phone‑scam tactics as Moldovan victims lose over 1 million lei

The Romanian Police released a video showing a fraudster who pretended to be police chief Bogdan Ghebaur during a telephone call. The officer engaged the caller to expose the scammer's use of spoofing – masking the caller’s identity and demanding victims access official police websites to provide personal data. The police warned that such callers often pose as representatives of public institutions, banks or authorities, pressuring people to act quickly and share passwords or banking details.

In Moldova, police recorded two phone‑fraud cases in the past 24 hours and received reports of three earlier incidents, with total losses exceeding one million lei. Victims were misled by callers claiming to represent the National Bank of Moldova and other legal bodies. Authorities emphasized the need for the public to verify identities, avoid transferring money to “safe” accounts, and report suspicious calls.
