Romanian politicians criticize proposal to grant AEP power over political parties

Political figures in Romania, including former Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu and USR's Alexandru Dimitriu, have criticized a new legislative proposal aimed at reforming the establishment and dissolution of political parties.

The draft law, submitted for public transparency by Adrian Țuțuianu of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), would grant the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) significant powers regarding the creation, erasure, and statute modifications of political parties and alliances.

Critics argue the proposal seeks to centralize power within the AEP, potentially allowing the ruling party to influence the existence of political opponents. Alexandru Dimitriu specifically noted that the project could bypass judicial mediation in party dissolution processes and limit legal appeals to a single instance at the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which he described as unconstitutional.
