Moldova sees rise in millionaires and shifting social trends
Moldova is experiencing significant economic shifts, characterized by a rising number of millionaires and evolving social structures. According to the State Tax Service, the number of individuals declaring annual incomes exceeding one million lei reached a record 9,643 in 2025, a 20% increase from the previous year. These individuals reported cumulative incomes of 32.8 billion lei, with dividends serving as the primary source of wealth.
Socially, data indicates a growing reliance on family units over state institutions. Sociologist Ian Lisnevschi notes that while marriage rates have declined, 65.7% of citizens view family as their primary source of support, suggesting a trend where families increasingly fulfill roles traditionally managed by the state.
In legal and corporate news, Anastasia Taburceanu, a former employee of the state-owned company MoldATSA and cousin of President Maia Sandu, has returned over 1.1 million lei to the company. The repayment, made in four installments during July 2026, covers her total compensation, including salary and bonuses, following a scandal regarding her hiring without a competitive process. MoldATSA stated that official control procedures are in their final stages.
Additionally, the tourism sector saw a 28.5% increase in foreign visitors during the first half of the year, and rental income tax revenues rose by 33.7% in the first seven months of 2026.
