Romanian Post issues stamps for canonization of Lady Maria Brâncoveanu

Romfilatelia and the Romanian Post have announced a new postage stamp issue titled “Canonization of Lady Maria Brâncoveanu, Wife of Saint Constantin Brancoveanu.” The collection, which includes two stamps and a First Day Cover, is scheduled to enter circulation on Friday, August 14, 2026.

The stamps feature religious iconography and portraits: one stamp with a face value of 6 Lei depicts a canonization icon by painters Razvan and Mihaela Badescu, while a 21 Lei stamp features a portrait of Saint Lady Maria Brancoveanu by iconographer Marieta Rotariu. The First Day Cover includes tulips of the “Lady Maria Brancoveanu” cultivar, which is the only tulip cultivar registered with a Romanian name.

The release commemorates the canonization of Maria Brâncoveanu (1661–1729), the wife of the Wallachian ruler Constantin Brâncoveanu. The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church approved her canonization in July 2025. Her local proclamation is set for August 16, 2026, at the “St George the New” Church in Bucharest, where the relics of the Brâncoveanu martyrs and Saint Maria Brâncoveanu are kept.
