Carfil armament factory fire investigated as alleged Russian sabotage

Authorities are investigating a September 14 fire at the Carfil armament factory industrial platform in Brașov County, Romania, as part of an alleged Russian-coordinated sabotage network. The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and DIICOT have linked the incident to a network allegedly directed from Russia, utilizing individuals recruited via social media or the dark web.

Three foreign nationals, including two Belarusians and one Ukrainian, are under investigation for the fire. Two suspects were reportedly apprehended in Germany while allegedly preparing for similar acts, and a European arrest warrant has been issued for a third suspect located in Poland. While the fire primarily damaged nearby civilian businesses, including auto services and a laundry, investigators believe the intended target was the armament facility.

Răzvan Pîrcălăbescu, director of the national armament company ROMARM, stated that the SRI had warned armament factories about potential Russian sabotage risks earlier in 2026. The Russian Embassy has denied any involvement, describing the allegations as lacking evidence and characterizing them as political cynicism.
