Romanian President Nicușor Dan at EU-West Balkans summit in Montenegro

President Nicușor Dan attended the EU‑Western Balkans summit in Tivat, Montenegro on 5 June 2026. Romania’s participation was presented as a reaffirmation of support for the EU integration path of Western Balkan states, as well as Moldova and Ukraine. Leaders discussed the EU enlargement agenda, the 2023 Growth Plan for the region, deeper economic cooperation, security and defence capacity building, cyber‑resilience and measures against disinformation. Dan emphasized that EU expansion is a strategic investment in European security and prosperity and stressed that accession must be merit‑based, requiring full alignment with EU standards and the Common Foreign and Security Policy.

In a separate interview ahead of the summit, Dan was asked about a contingency plan if designated premier Eugen Tomac failed to secure a parliamentary majority. He said there are no guarantees on hypothetical scenarios and that the responsibility lies with the designated government to negotiate a cabinet and programme and obtain parliamentary support. Dan added he could intervene on “very important” issues if necessary, but otherwise would let the political process run its course.
