US Ambassador Nirenberg Highlights Strategic Ties and SMR Investment with Romania

U.S. Ambassador to Romania Darryl Nirenberg marked the United States’ 250th anniversary by emphasizing the strong strategic partnership with Bucharest. In an interview, he said the shared values underpinning both nations have deepened cooperation and will continue to do so.

Nirenberg discussed the planned Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project at Doicesti, which relies on U.S. NuScale technology. He noted that the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation has issued a letter of intent to provide combined loan and equity financing of up to $2 billion, representing no more than 25 % of the total investment cost. The ambassador affirmed that these energy initiatives are a priority of his mandate and that the United States remains committed to supporting Romania’s development despite recent political tensions.

He also referenced recent meetings with Romanian Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare and DFC senior official Conor Coleman, underscoring ongoing dialogue on investment and security matters.
