Romanian prison authority restores inmate phone service after cyberattack

The National Penitentiary Administration (ANP) in Romania suffered a cyberattack that targeted multiple workstations and servers, disabling several digital services such as the inmate telephone system, the online visitation portal, the management application, and the agency’s website.

The Directorate for National Cybersecurity (DNSC) was notified immediately and its teams intervened to contain the incident. Phone service for prisoners has now been re‑enabled, but a restriction limits each inmate to a maximum of five minutes of telephone conversation per day. Other services remain operational through alternative methods, for example visit appointments can be made by phone or in person at the reception desk.

Preliminary analysis suggests the attack was a ransomware operation, though details about data compromise or ransom demands have not been disclosed. The investigation continues.
