Romanian finance and court staff protest unified salary law

On 4 June 2026, roughly 17,900 employees of the Ministry of Finance, ANAF and court clerks across Romania stopped work to protest a draft unified salary law. The law is expected to cut allowances by 2,000–4,000 lei per month for many workers, which unions say would jeopardise the fiscal system and the functioning of courts. Offices of ANAF and local treasuries were closed, and public services such as tax filings and payments were delayed.

Trade unions representing finance staff and judicial auxiliary personnel demand a separate salary scale that reflects the specific responsibilities, risks and professional complexity of their jobs. Court operations in several counties, including Prahova and Botoșani, were partially suspended between 2–5 June and fully halted on 4 June from 08:00 to 12:00 as a further protest measure. Union leader Vasile Marica said the action is a “national signal” that “the fiscal system does not function without us.”
