Romanian prosecutors charge former mayor and impostor in separate fraud cases
The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has sent 31 defendants, including former Sector 5 mayor Marian Vanghelie, to trial for establishing an organized crime group that carried out overpriced public procurements through the company Economat Sector 5. The court case alleges that the scheme caused a loss of about 120 million lei to the municipality and related public institutions.
In a separate investigation, police arrested a 31‑year‑old man from Ploiești who pretended to be a DIICOT prosecutor and an SRI officer. Using forged uniforms and documents, he persuaded friends and a girlfriend to give him roughly €48,000 by citing fictitious medical emergencies and urgent legal fees. He is being investigated for fraud and identity fraud.
Both cases are being pursued by DNA as part of its anti‑corruption and organized‑crime efforts in Romania.
