Romania's Bacalaureat Exam Fraud Network Placed Under Judicial Control

Five individuals accused of running a Bacalaureat exam‑cheating network were placed under judicial control for 60 days by the Alba County Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutors say the group operated from 2023 to 2026, filming exam papers, transmitting them to remote collaborators, and using concealed earpieces to dictate answers to candidates. The scheme allegedly served dozens of students for cash, with proceeds divided among participants.

Authorities conducted 47 home raids across five Transylvanian counties—Alba, Cluj, Bihor, Arad and Sibiu—seizing evidence and detaining the suspects. The Minister of Education, Mihai Dimian, emphasized that the integrity of examinations is “non‑negotiable.” The judicial control imposes restrictions on the suspects, including a ban on contacting co‑accused or other members of the criminal network, under penalty of possible house arrest or preventive detention.
