Romanian Queen Maria Dies in 1938

On 18 July 1938, Queen Maria of Romania, the beloved wife of King Ferdinand I, passed away in Sinaia after a prolonged struggle with cancer. Historically celebrated as the “queen‑soldier” and the “mother of the Romanian people,” she had become a symbol of national unity during World War I, visiting front lines, assisting wounded soldiers, and serving as honorary commander of the 4th Roșiori Regiment.

Arthur Gold Lee, a British writer and volunteer, recalled her compassion: “She stayed at the head of young soldiers dying of hunger, shedding tears for each, holding their hands for hours and comforting them as a mother.” Romanian politician Constantin Argetoianu later lauded her wartime contributions, cementing her legacy in the nation’s collective memory.
