Romanian Red Cross medical caravans reach isolated communities
The Romanian Red Cross has been operating medical caravans for over four years to provide healthcare assistance to impoverished and isolated communities. These mobile units target individuals who cannot travel to clinics due to disabilities or geographic isolation.
In recent months, the initiative has visited eight localities in Romania—including Vrancea, Iași, Olt, Bihor, Constanța, Brăila, and Buzău—as well as two locations in the Republic of Moldova. The medical teams, which include resident doctors supported by specialists and the Military Hospital Bucharest, focus on both diagnosing medical conditions and providing health education to encourage preventative care.
Health program manager Raluca Buzea noted significant challenges, particularly in pediatrics. Issues include vaccine hesitancy and parents refusing hospitalizations for children. In some cases, medical teams have had to work extensively to convince families of the necessity of professional medical intervention for infants.
