Romania faces rising business insolvencies and economic pessimism

Romania is experiencing significant economic shifts characterized by rising business insolvencies and growing investor pessimism. Between January and August 2026, 4,782 companies and authorized persons (PFA) entered insolvency, a 4.85% increase compared to the previous year. The construction sector saw a massive 256.58% surge in insolvencies, while wholesale and retail trade increased by 175%. Bucharest recorded the highest number of cases with 861 insolvencies.

Retail investor sentiment is also declining. An eToro survey indicates that 69% of Romanian retail investors lack confidence in the country's economic prospects, citing political instability and inflation as primary risks. While confidence in personal income and living standards has reached a three-year low, many investors remain active in their own portfolios, particularly in crypto-assets and local stocks.

On the consumer side, the automotive market saw an 11% decline in new registrations for September 2026, reflecting cautious spending. Meanwhile, pensions remain a vital economic pillar, accounting for approximately 17.1% of average monthly household income. The National House of Public Pensions has outlined the October 2026 payment schedule, with cash distributions via post occurring between October 1–15 and bank transfers starting October 12.
