Romanian Senate adopts bill for digital expiration alerts

The Romanian Senate has adopted a legislative initiative that would require public institutions to notify citizens via SMS, email, or other digital means at least 30 days before their administrative documents expire. The measure targets documents such as driver's licenses, permits, certificates, and other individual administrative acts with limited validity.

Proposed by Senator Violeta Alexandru, the project aims to reduce bureaucracy and help citizens avoid penalties by ensuring they have sufficient time to renew essential paperwork. While the notifications are mandatory for institutions to provide, receiving them will be optional for citizens, who can choose their preferred method of contact.

The bill now moves to the Chamber of Deputies for final debate and voting. If passed, the law is expected to become applicable starting in 2028, allowing authorities time to develop the necessary digital mechanisms.
