Romanian Senate adopts declaration on EU veto rights

The Romanian Senate has adopted a declaration aimed at defending the country's right to protect its national interests within the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy. The initiative, proposed by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), requests that the Government clarify whether Oana Țoiu held an express mandate regarding the signing of a common document that could limit the use of the veto and expand qualified majority voting.

The declaration also calls for Parliament to be consulted before the government assumes any position that might alter the decision-making balance in EU foreign and security policy. The motion passed with 64 votes in favor, supported by PSD, AUR, and PACE – Întâi România, while 29 senators from PNL and USR voted against it.

In a separate but related political context, AUR President George Simion addressed the European Parliament, characterizing Romania as a “banana republic” and claiming that Călin Georgescu is a “political prisoner.” Simion urged European Parliament members to monitor judicial actions against Georgescu, arguing that the exclusion of certain political forces from the democratic process weakens European values.
