Romanian Senate advances inquiry into meeting with Constitutional Court President

The Romanian Senate is moving toward a parliamentary inquiry to investigate a meeting between former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and the President of the Constitutional Court, Elena-Simina Tănăsescu. The Senate leadership has scheduled a plenary vote for Monday to grant the Constitutional Committee the powers of an inquiry commission. The investigation aims to clarify the circumstances, purpose, and nature of the meeting, which took place in the Senate President's office. Hearings are expected to begin on August 26, with Bolojan, Tănăsescu, and parliamentary officials on the potential invite list.

Simultaneously, tensions have risen at the Constitutional Court regarding the publication of the reasoning for the Integrity Law's constitutionality. Reports suggest that President Tănăsescu may be attempting to delay the release of the official reasoning. This delay impacts the legislative process for the Integrity Law, which includes amendments affecting the mandate of USR leader and Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz. Furthermore, the delay affects the implementation of reforms tied to Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
