Romanian Senate designates 2029 as Year of Doina Cornea
The Romanian Senate has adopted a draft law designating 2029 as the ‘Year of Doina Cornea’ to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the prominent anti-communist dissident. The vote passed with 92 in favor, one against, and eight abstentions.
Doina Cornea (1929–2018) was a central figure in the struggle for freedom and democracy in Romania. The legislation notes her history of resistance, including an arrest by the Securitate following the 1987 Brașov workers' revolt and significant fines imposed for her public criticisms of the regime.
Under the proposed law, central and local public authorities, cultural institutions, educational bodies, and NGOs are encouraged to organize or support cultural, educational, and scientific events dedicated to her life and work. Public institutions may provide logistical and financial support for these programs, and national broadcasters are encouraged to include dedicated programming regarding her role in Romanian history.
