Romanian Senator proposes five-year terms for intelligence chiefs
Romanian Senator Nicoleta Pauliuc has submitted a legislative proposal to the Senate to establish five-year mandates for the heads of Romania's national intelligence and security services. The proposal suggests that these terms should overlap with the mandate of the President of Romania, who serves as the leader of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT).
The initiative aims to regulate the duration of mandates, the number of terms allowed, and the conditions for exercising leadership roles within the national defense, public order, and national security systems. Specifically, the project targets the directors of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE), the Protection and Guard Service (SPP), the General Directorate for Internal Protection (DGPI), the Special Telecommunications Service (STS), and the Army Intelligence Directorate.
This proposal follows other similar legislative efforts in Parliament, including a project from the USR party seeking to reduce mandates to four years, and a proposal from SOS that focuses on reducing the SRI director's term to five years.
