Romanian students demand increase in social scholarship amounts

The Romanian Ministry of Education and Research has proposed maintaining the minimum social scholarship at 925 lei per month for the 2026-2027 academic year. This proposal has met opposition from the National Alliance of Student Organizations from Romania (ANOSR).

ANOSR is calling for the scholarship to be increased to at least 1,050 lei, a figure previously proposed by the National Commission for Higher Education Financing (CNFIS). The student federation argues that the current 925 lei proposal only covers 60.65% of the estimated costs for food and housing.

According to an ANOSR analysis, the total monthly cost for a student's basic needs—including food, dormitory housing, study materials, transport, and hygiene products—is approximately 2,027.99 lei. Specifically, the organization estimates monthly food costs at 1,071 lei and weighted average dormitory housing at 454 lei.
