Romanian teachers and health workers rally against new public salary law

The Federation SANITAS of Romania voiced its support for the education unions’ protest against the draft public salary law, saying the grievances of teachers mirror those of health and social‑assistance workers. SANITAS criticized the bill for being drafted without sufficient basis, real consultation with social partners, or impact assessment, and warned that employees in both sectors face the same lack of respect from the government. “Si in Sanatate, si in Educatie ne confruntam cu aceeasi lipsa de respect … suntem judecati cu aceeasi aroganta,” the federation said.

Thousands of teachers marched to the Parliament building, joining a protest organized by the Free Union of Education Syndicates, the Spiru Haret Education Federation and the Alma Mater National Trade Union Federation. Representing over 300,000 education and research staff, the unions demanded an immediate withdrawal of the draft law, arguing it violates previous commitments such as OUG 57/2023 and will deepen precariousness for public‑sector workers. They warned of further demonstrations if the proposal is not amended.
