Romanian teachers' unions to block Parliament on Thursday
On Thursday at 11:00, several Romanian teachers' unions will block access to the Parliament building as part of a protest announced in a joint communiqué. The unions say they will present more than 160,000 signatures supporting a legislative initiative to amend and supplement the Education Laws No. 198/2023 and No. 199/2023, and to repeal provisions of Law No. 141/2025 which they deem harmful to the education system.
Their demands include reducing class sizes, reinstating previous teaching norms, granting an installation bonus to teachers working in disadvantaged areas, organising a separate class for the eighth grade, providing scholarships equal to the net salary of a junior teacher for students pursuing double‑specialisation or master’s teaching programmes, correcting the calculation of hourly pay rates, and maintaining full‑time scholarships for high‑school students who win medals at international Olympiads. The unions called on parliamentarians to discuss the initiative urgently so that the 2026‑2027 school year can start under optimal conditions for both staff and students.
