Romania Wage Law deadlock risks 770 million euros in EU funds FAST-MOVING
Romanian political parties (PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR) have failed to reach a consensus on the new Wage Law for the budgetary sector, according to President Nicușor Dan. This deadlock places approximately 770 million euros in funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) at risk, as the legislative milestone must be met by August 31.
The failure has triggered intense political finger-pointing. The PNL accuses the PSD of intentionally blocking the reform to sabotage the PNRR milestone, while the PSD claims the PNL has failed to take responsibility and has kept the project secret. Meanwhile, trade unions have rejected the current draft, arguing it contains fundamental errors and fails to address existing salary inequities, noting that it replaces certain bonuses with new allowances rather than creating a coherent system.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan emphasized that the stability of the wage framework is more critical than the immediate disbursement of EU funds, warning that a lack of predictability could lead to wage policies being driven by electoral considerations rather than economic reality.
