Romanian traditional wooden gates preservation project launched

A new cultural initiative is working to preserve the vanishing traditional wooden gates of Gorj and Maramureș. The project, organized by Asociația Docuart and co-financed by the National Cultural Fund Administration, aims to document not only the physical structures but also the stories, symbols, and craftsmanship behind them.

In the first phase, researchers documented over 35 traditional gates across 20 localities in Gorj through photography, film, and interviews. The project also explores the symbolic connection between Gorj's peasant gates and the artistic language found in Constantin Brâncuși’s ‘Gate of the Kiss’. The second phase involves collaborative restoration work between woodcarvers from Gorj and Maramureș at the Museum of Popular Architecture in Curtișoara.

Experts note that while Romania's rural heritage—including Saxon houses and Maramureș households—is increasingly attractive to tourists, there is a risk of losing the living community. Specialists emphasize that true preservation requires building local economies where traditions and crafts can remain viable professions, rather than just restoring monuments in emptying villages.
